I NEED Ideas
December 4, 2007
I am not artsy. I am jealous of all artsy people.
Well, Rachel brought home an artsy “family” project. Argh! So I need some input from you sweet, talented, kind, smart
artsy folks out there. (yes I am kissing some major booty here!)
It’s really simple actually. She has an outline of a Christmas wreath. Ya know, one small circle and one larger circle. She wants to do something other than just color it. She would like to do something like gluing macaroni
to it but not use food. Well, I’m poor until Friday. Since, I’m not artsy I don’t have things like feathers, beads, etc lying around. I don’t scrapbook so I don’t have stickers or anything like that. About all I do have is construction paper, thread (cuz I cross-stitch), a printer, glue, basic scissors (none of those fancy scrapbooking kind).
Do any of you have any ideas on how to do make a cool looking wreath with extremely limited supplies??? I promised her we could start on it tonight. It’s due Friday.
My boss came up with bells, glitter glue and ribbon for bows. I have the bells and glitter glue and she is providing ribbon. Anyone got anything else that could go with that???

On the construction paper trace out her hands in all different colors and then paste them around the wreath.
That’s a neat idea!

OOH I like the above idea. I also wondered if you might find some actual pine (or other) branches and strip them of their greenery and glue that on.
I live in the desert. Greenery is nonexistent
Ewww…actually I have this shrub that we hate cuz it needs trimming all the time….hmmm…i could work with that!

What about magazines? cut out letters to spell something like her name or whatnot.. or print out a photo and glue that? Or cut out different colors and glue them like a collage to create a cool colorful background on the wreath and then write over it?

fill balloons with paint (the kind that rinses out EASILY) and drip or splatter (safely) on your wreath. Shows that something doesn’t have to be PERFECT to be beautifil…
Aside from that, I would take a magzine and cut out of the Christmasey photos and glue them. To show how advertising affects us all….
Okay, I am all out of creative…

I love the handprint idea. Here’s some directions:

She could decorate with unexpected foods, like cake sprinkles, etc. Spare buttons, thread glued in squiggles, etc, random crap you have in your junk drawer that you don’t need/have one of/don’t know what it is, etc, would work well. I had a similar assignment in 5th grade (whoa, can we say LONG ago!?), and had a blast with the random stuff my parents were able to dig up for me.
If she’s really into the symbolism of things, she could have handprints of all your family members encircling the ring…a symbol of love, teamwork, etc, everything that “family” stands for.
Keep us posted on what she decideds to do!
We just went to my mom’s to see what she had laying around (she’s a 1st grade teacher). My grandma is really crafty and when she passed away my mom got all her craft junk. Let me tell you we have a ton of stuff to put on this wreath now!!! We have a clay gingerbread man, a couple of green bells, a bunch of apples, and I don’t know what else!

Not really my area of expertise I’m afraid, but I’ll look forward to a photo when you’re done.
Cheers
I will have picture!!!

Just a few thoughts. Cotton balls, foil, maybe cookie sprinkles stuff if you have that. Look up how to cut out white snowflakes from paper and glue them around it. Have fun! You have lots of good ideas above!

One of my former students one year made me a wreath out of aluminum foil type stuff, and decorated it with snowflakes. It was really cool, and the best thing was I could keep it in my classroom during the whole winter season, and not just at Christmas.
I’ve done the handprint wreaths before with my boys and they turn out SO stinkin’ cute.
You got some great ideas here!!
