Toilet Training Idea

January 28, 2008

baby_cool1.jpgOn Friday, a mom on the fragile x listserv asked how to change big kids diapers in public.  I haven’t had to do this in a couple of years but one mom had such a fantastic idea that I had to share it.  So if you have an older child still in diapers maybe this can help.

Original Question:

How do you handle changing big kids’ diapers in public?  Kids who are WAY too big for the diaper changing table in the restrooms?  I’m going to be approaching this problem someday.  Right now we throw a coat on the floor in the restroom and change the boys there — they are squirmy though and there isn’t always a lot of space for a growing boy….

The Answer:diaper-change.jpg

4 words….Pet pads and Lysol. You can get the Pet pads at the pet section of  Wal-Mart, Target stores, etc. They look just like the bed pads nurses use in a hospital for an adult bed. Just Lysol spray the floor, lay pad down on the bathroom floor, get on your knees, and do your thing. Throw everything away in a plastic baggie. I never liked the baby changing thing on the wall. I like to be lined up with the boys at pull-up/diaper time. Just my 2 cents. We quit carrying a true diaper bag when DS was age 3 and started carrying a black backpack…looked less awkward as he aged and still wasn’t potty trained.

I always make them stand up to change them. I just rip the sides (or un-velcro them) and remove it gently so as not to dump the contents. Then I make them bend over a bit so I can wipe them. An altogether awkward situation, and thankfully my kids didn’t/don’t poop in public. Thank heavens I have at least one of my kids PT’d. I am getting desperate about Blake, though. He’ll be five in April, and I am feeling pressure to get it done.

I make Punkin stand up, too. Then I have him sit on the potty and talk about how his poop should go in the potty (very gently, of course). And sometimes I even flush the poo so it’s not so smelly. More than you wanted to know?

lol…we can use all the information we can get :)

James (4) has always had a hard time doing the diaper changing stations in the public bathrooms. He would just freak out and not let go of me. I think it may be a vestibular thing. He does the same thing at restaurants if the chairs or booths move a little. So, I’ve done the changing pads on the floor. I like the idea of using the ones to throw away.

I’m hoping we can get Grace (2) PT’d quickly and that James would follow suit eventually. He loves to go in and try when she tries. Grace will not poop on the potty for anything. She’ll tell me when she is getting ready to poop and when she does, but if I try to take her on the potty, she freaks. Any ideas how to get her to want to and feel safe doing it? I told her I would up her number of M&M’s if she poops on the potty. She always sounds interested, but when it comes down to it….nope. She did something really cute today. I normally set the kitchen timer and when it goes off, it’s time to try to tee-tee. Today, without setting the timer I told her it was time to go tee-tee. She just looked at me and said very calmly, “no mommy…timer not go off.” Too cute.

I bet persistence and making it fun will help her. She obviously is liking the timer…that is tooo cute :) . I know some parents who have put childrens books in the bathroom, a coloring book, a favorite toy, etc. Ewww….one mom of triplets used soft soothing music in the bathroom…that might relax her and calm her.

Well, after two kids training in the 4/5 age-range….I would say that after the first guy (who wouldn’t change lying down), I got in the habit of changing with them standing up. Outside is never fun. I never used pullups outside if I could help it. I would prefer cloth diapers with a diaper cover (it held in leaks better, and looked sleek, and easier to take off, honestly). I didn’t like pullups. ALso, my kids were thin and could wear the largest diaper if they had to. My littlest is 2, and unlike other moms, I am totally relaxed, and haven’t even thought of it for her.
