Conferences for the “little kids” ~ Part Deux Matty
February 16, 2008
Matty’s conferences are more of a gab session than any of the other 3 kids’ are. The main reason is because Matt doesn’t have the ability to come home and let us know how his day went, so his teachers and I are in constant communication. Matty is following his IEP and doing good. I have a couple of reports I received that I’ll type in at the bottom of the post.
The teacher shared a really funny story that illustrates just how smart this kid is. The kids all got a really big cookie the other day for V-day. Matt isn’t much of a sugar kid so he opted to put his in his backpack. A little while later Mrs. J noticed a baggy on Matt’s desk. She asked Matt if he ate his cookie. He told her no. So she looked in his backpack and his cookie was gone.
She told Matt that he did eat his cookie because it was gone. Matt told her that he threw it away. So one of his classmates looked around in the trash seeing if it was in the trash. It wasn’t there either.
She asked Matty if he ate his cookie and he once again told her no.
So now they are wondering if maybe he ate someone elses cookie and are still trying to figure out what he did with his. So they check each of the students to see if they ate their cookie, or still have it, while they scour Matt’s backpack for his cookie.
The whole time Matty is giggling. Finally, Mrs. J says sternly to Matt, “You ate your cookie didn’t you, Matthew.”
With a giggle and a smile he says, “Yep.”
The little turkey sent everyone on a wild goose chase for his own enjoyment.

Adaptive P.E. Progress ReportFeb. 11, 2008Matt still makes extraordinary progress in P.E. class socially. Coach M and I encourage all sports activities and warm-up activities. Matt engages in all activities independently from peer and teacher modeling. The only major modification we make for Matt is the material of the equipment. He throws and catches nerf material. He does all warm-up activities on his own and his skill level or finesse is always improving. Matt excels in running activities. He is not first but he does run a steady pace and always finishes the run. Matt’s attention span in P.E. is also improving but, it is something we need to constantly work on in class. He needs a lot of work in this area for enhanced skill level and for safety concerns but, there is always improvement in some area.Matt seems to be enjoying himself in P.E. class and the entire class cheers him on in every activity. He is the first to get a partner each day. Matt gets a big smile on his face when I come into class and it makes me feel great. We are in a jump rope unit right now and this is a skill Matt knows he has little skill in so we are bowling instead and he loves it.Matt is improving in fading his tense stiffening of his chest and upper body when he is excited or very happy. I have used verbal prompts and a soft touch on his chest. Each time he is in P.E. class he does it less and less.Coach and I enjoy Matt in P.E. and he is a bright spot to our lives.Respectfully,
Mrs. K
