“Mean Girls” in Real Life
Lauren had a really tough life experience last night. She had a “friend” who was having a slumber party for her birthday. Part of her party was going to a movie. I had made appointments for haircuts today so she couldn’t do the slumber party part of the evening.
Lauren worked it out with Kevin and her friends as to what time the movie would start, who would be there, and what rules she had. Kevin planned to drop her off at the theater and pick her up.
When Kevin and Lauren got to the theater the girls were still not there. Lauren was text messaging the birthday girl. She said that they were at the mall and would be there shortly. A few minutes later a truck came screaming into parking with no regard to people or other vehicles. Kevin was livid but not as angry as he was when he found out that this truck full of boys also had the birthday girl and one of the other girls who were supposed to be attending. Lauren had told the girls that she couldn’t go if there were boys there. They had swore to her it was going to be five girls. That was it.
Well, they lied to her. Two of the girls didn’t make it. We’re not sure if they realized what these two girls were up to or not. So it would have been these 3 girls and these boys.
Lauren was devastated by the fact that they duped her. Kevin wigged out on the driver of the truck, who happened to be the birthday girl’s boyfriend, for the way he was driving. The other girl there started making snide remarks to Kevin. We have told Lauren we didn’t like her hanging out with this girl because she always caused problems when she was at our house. We banned her from our house about 6 months ago.
Lauren was back in the van before Kevin was done chiding the group of teens. He knows he didn’t get through to them about driving safely or treating people with respect but he felt a little better about it as least venting to them.
Kevin brought Lauren straight home. Lauren was in tears all the way home. She confessed that she was a little scared about going to the movies with these girls. They are prone to doing mean stuff to people intentionally for their own enjoyment. For anyone who has watched the movie, “Mean Girls,” you will see the trend there. It doesn’t just happen in movies. It really does happen in real life. It hurts and its wrong. But those people are out there.
Lauren has learned a tough lesson in picking friends and trusting people. A very painful lesson that most of us have experienced at one point in our lives.
Kevin took Lauren to get ice cream at Sonic. He’s a good man. He knows what soothes the soul.
Once they got back they climbed in bed with me and we watched a very scary movie, “1408“. Lauren laid between us and held our hands almost the whole movie. She wound up falling asleep in our bed about an hour after the movie ended. She just needed Mom and Dad after that experience.
