A New Chore
March 15, 2008
I decided to give Matthew a household chore that was all his. He now gets to take out the trash. With anything we have to
break it down into its simplest form. I had him start with the kitchen trash. I went outside and put the dumpster lid up for him. Then I got the trash out of its can. He was very happy to have the chore. He trucked right on outside with it and hefted it up and over. He was ready to move on to the next thing.
I went to my room and had him get my bathroom trash. I let him take it outside by himself. He did great. So I told him to go ahead and grab my bedroom trash. This trash sits under Kevin’s desk and Kevin was working on his computer. Matty initially just came in and stared at him. So Kevin pulled the trash can out from under the desk and set it behind him. Kevin told him to come get the bag. Matty just looked at him and told him, “It’s gross!”
Kevin pulled the bag out of the trash can for him. I came in with the trash from the little kids’ bedroom and poured it on top. The whole time Matt was telling us just how gross it was. He was giggling the sweetest little giggle. He seems to like “gross” stuff. Typical boy! When the trash got all bagged up, he threw the bag over his shoulder, just like Santa Claus. All the way down the hall he giggled about just how gross it was.
Matt is so strong from all of the stimming that he does. He can take the heaviest bag of trash and toss it around like a Nerf ball. All of the kids are jealous of his muscles. The top lid of the dumpster comes to his chin but he has no problems tossing the trash in there. When he got done putting all the trashes in the dumpster he shut the lid and trucked on into the house.
I then had him put trash bags back in the trash cans. He isn’t so good at this part. This will definitely need some work. Once again, when he got to the bedroom trash he had to giggle and tell Kevin just how gross it is. Gross or not…he loved it!

Wonderful. Chores are great for kids. Taking out the trash is a big kid job I bet he feels so proud!

I agree! They’ll need to now all these things out in the world…how to wash dishes, how to sweep up, how to take out the recycling and the compost. I’m all for pushing their limitations a little farther all the time. Good work!

Our Matt finds humor in gross things. Evan’s dirty diapers were a constant source of laughs for months.
