National Fragile X Awareness Day

Today is National Fragile X Awareness Day in the USA. In 2000, John Edwards presented the bill to Congress to be approved.  If you would like to read the entire resolution you can access it here: FXS Day.

The International Fragile X Conference begins tomorrow and this press release was just released in anticipation: High Hopes for New Treatments at Fragile X International Conference

For today I wanted to share the numbers.  It is amazing how common this is worldwide and how many of us have never heard of it.  These statistics are on a worldwide basis and are straight from the FXS Foundation.

• Approximately 1 in 3600 to 4000 males in the world are born with the full mutation for Fragile X.
  Note: The vast majority of males with the full mutation will have fragile X syndrome.
• Approximately 1 in 4000 to 6000 females in the world are born with the full mutation for Fragile X.   Note: Approximately 50% of females with the full mutation will have some features of fragile X syndrome.
• Approximately 1 in 800 men in the world are carriers of the Fragile X premutation.
• Approximately 1 in 260 women in the world are carriers of the Fragile X premutation.
